How To Swaddle Your Infant

The fact is, our friend The Holbstron has never even changed a dirty diaper.  Isn't that something? The man knows nothing about babies.

The other night I decided to start by teaching him how to swaddle. To do this I needed a blanket, and I needed a volunteer. Barney is always willing. You never know when your Scottie is going to need a good swaddle, after all.

Swaddling
With Many Thanks To Barney For his Cooperation

Start with a blanket.

Take your baby and lay him at the top left corner of your blanket. Take the right corner and wrap it over your baby's right arm, like this:

Now tuck that corner under the baby's body, nice and tight (the tighter the better).

Next, take the bottom corner of the blanket, pull it up to cover baby's feet, and tuck it under the top fold.

Last, stretch the left corner over your baby and tuck it under him good and tight.

Now you are ready to pick up your baby!

What you do with him now is entirely up to you.

(Should I nurse him?)

  1. OMGosh! That is SO awesome! I'm totally cracking up! Just practice that a few hundred more times and you'll be set. (Not the breastfeeding, of course.)

  11. That SO made me giggle!!!

For reference - you can use a rectangle blanket too for swaddling ... you just fold the top a little different.

Thank blanket is sooooooo cute! Did you make the one laying over the couch too? I love them both!

The blanket is sooooooo adorable! I wish I could crochet like that!

Love Barney's facial expression throughout the whole ordeal. What a patient, good puppy you have!

You're a pro at this mommy stuff! You'll do great when your baby gets here!

  14. HIH-LARIOUS! Natalie, you are so ready to be a mama to an acutal human child. Clearly!

So these pictures are funny; I love that Barnaby ended up being your "volunteer" likely because he was there and approximately the right size. The second picture of him makes me laugh right out loud--where he's looking at the camera all wide-eyed, like, "what the hell have I done to deserve this?!" kind of look going on. Ha!

I have to wonder...will you be doing a tutorial on Changing Baby's Diaper, too? Barnaby MacDuff has no idea how easy he had it being swaddled. HA!

  15. In some of the photos, your expression is as funny as Barney's! And LOOK! In one image you're making a fist with your toes! That's a hard working Mamma!!! Babies are pretty wiggly and spastic, but if you can swaddle Barney, well, you've got it made.

  16. Hahaha. If I tried that with my fur baby I'd end up clawed to death. ;)

  17. That's awesome that you swaddled Barney! I LOVE the blanket you crocheted and the shirt you're wearing. :)

  19. I don't know many dogs that would sit like that and actually ENJOY being swaddled. I got a good laugh out of this one. Thanks!

  20. You really have to check out the Miracle blanket. I think you can only get it online. My son slept through the night the first night we used it (when he was 6 weeks old) and every night after that. My husband tells every pregnant person he sees to get one. They even have a great tutorial video on their website! www.miracleblanket.com

Oh, and I love, love, love Barney's face in those pictures! I wonder if I should swaddle my stupid dog?

  21. Oh my heavens, that was funny! There was definitely a glint of demon in his eyes!

  22. I like to hold our dog like a baby (because she HATES to be held). I can hardly wait to swaddle her!

  23. Go easy on the Holbster and buy him a SwaddleMe--it has velcro! And besides, what is a baby for if you can't buy it cute stuff?

  24. Ohh hahahaha too funny! I wonder what Peter Pan was thinking during all this...

  25. Love the pics of Barney! And I have to admit I've never changed a diaper either, and I have no plans of ever changing one. Ever. Should be easy since I don't want kids!

  26. Do you have chipped toe nail polish? If you do, I'm sorry I just blew your cover, but I always curl my toes up like you did when I'm trying to hide my terrible pedi during impromptu swaddling pictures. :-)

  27. okay, you know what I HATE about these pictures?? We can't see any of your baby bump!!

    I actually love this series!

  28. Out of hand! Nat, you are EARTH MOTHER SUPREME! Mercy that was funny.

Holbsbuddy...I've dodged the diaper change myself and I feel no less a man for it. In fact, from what I've witnessed, mostly olfactory, I'd say I'm better off.

  30. I think if the Holbspapa swaddles Barnaby enough he will have more than enough experience to swaddle the Holbsbaby!
