in the middle of a terribly crummy weekend, the holbrooks went to the beach.
it was huck's first time seeing the ocean, and after a horrible day saying goodbye to a loved one, and then hitting a parked car in a parking lot, having a little family adventure was a much needed distraction.
sitting there on our beach blanket with my baby in his sun hat and layers of sun screen in a swim diaper with daddy recording the day, we really felt like a little family. i loved it really hard.
why does the holbs looks like the beach unibomber!
this week, on babble:

I rarely comment, but I have to say, I love your swimsuit. You pull it off well, and look adorable doing so!
ReplyDeleteAnd Huck is cute too! Good job with managing to keep his hat on! Most kids seem to rip them off after 20 seconds or so.
you have to try long beach. Jones beach is a little crazy. It cost a bit more to go on to the beach but they have an awesome boardwalk. It is also right off the lirr.
ReplyDeleteHuck is an adorable chunker-roo!
ReplyDeleteNo, really. How do you manage that amazing figure after all those twizzlers and twix? Is it possible?! Skinny Minnie!
ReplyDeletethat baby is so cute regardless of where he is, what he wears, and however his photo is taken. gotta love those baby fats! i can't help but giggle when i see his photos.
ReplyDeleteYou are rockin' that bikini girl! Lovin' Huck's cubaluba.
ReplyDeleteI think you need to clarify a few things. First, why would you feel you NEED a one piece swimsuit when you can clearly wear a two piece so well? Did someone tell you that was wrong? I feel as though I need to hear this explained.
ReplyDeleteI mean, really.......my theory is "if you can, you should and if you can't, you shouldn't". And, I'm a member and grew up with the whole modesty thing so I get it but you're at the beach with your man and baby so what's the big deal? It's not like it's girls camp or something.
Wait....are you going to girls camp? Because that would make sense.
I hope someday when I have a baby I will be able to manage such super cute beach pictures too! Seriously, is Huck ever unhappy?? So sweet.
ReplyDeleteSuch cute pictures! In a slightly unrelated note, where do you find your delicious stripey tops?
ReplyDeletei agree - rock that two piece while you can. i know i do. jones beach is fun but i agree with an above commenter, try long beach. it's a great time.
ReplyDeleteNat is a Mormon and so am I. We're encouraged to be modest in our dress and appearance, so we're encouraged to wear one-piece bathing suits.
ReplyDelete@VRH--I get them all over. Usually H&M and Forever 21, but JCrew and Madewell make really good quality options if you're willing to invest a bit more. (I have not yet, and may never take the plunge and get a St. James, though I've always intrigued by the idea--but almost $100?? Yikes!)
ReplyDeleteAre we really encouraged to wear one-pieces? The only person I've ever heard that from is my mom, and she also thinks I shouldn't wear tanks or shorts when exercising. To each his own.
ReplyDeleteNat, you look cuuuuuuuuuuuute. And I just can't believe how chubby little Huck is (not you, of course!). Glad you had a fun day at the beach!
2 piece, 1 piece, 5 piece, I just want to look as good as you after giving birth someday!
ReplyDeleteNat, you look so great for just having a baby! I hope my sister sees these pics because she's 8 months pregnant and already talking about "getting back into skinny jeans." LOL Great pics!
ReplyDeletemmm. i may hate you a little now... i was the tiniest 98 lbs before my little man came... and now I have so many stretched out tummy parts i could never pull off a 2 piece... HOW DID YOU NOT TURN TO MUSH??
ReplyDeleteHuck looks so adorable- and props to you for having a kid who keeps his hat on! I must admit to a bit of envy over how fantastic you look- but I could never pull of a two piece even before bub was born!
ReplyDeleteHmm... Really cute 2 piece.
ReplyDeleteIf you wore a one piece, which one would you lose? The top or the bottom?
I never has so much fun at Jones Beach.
In this day and age a "one piece" does not mean modest. I haven't owned a one piece since I was 16. And, it was not a modest one piece.
ReplyDeleteI only own "2 piece" now and they are very modest, not bikini's, since I approve of modesty in my and my daughters, being a mormon and all. I get really tired of this mormon "one piece" bs we feed our girls like it's the be all end all of appropriate swim wear.
Give me a break.
Plus you look hot so........
ReplyDeleteGrrrl rock that suit, you totally can! This is my first summer wearing a one-piece (just had baby a couple months ago) and although I found a cute one, I would give anything to be rid of the strange elephant skin that is currently plaguing my midsection. I think two-pieces are generally easier for nursing, too, so there's always that! :)
ReplyDeletedarling baby!
ReplyDeleteThat Huck. Could just eat him up he's so adorable!
ReplyDeletehuck looks like he's so "over it" in the first photo.
ReplyDeleteand i am looooving his hat. it really brings out his curves.
With the back and forth going on here I thought it best to go right to the source for what is "right and wrong"...LDS.org. I found this little tidbit that should put an end to the argument of what we all really believe vs. what the church puts out there...
ReplyDelete"The Church encourages modesty in dress for all occasions, including swimming. The dilemma comes when people want pictures or measurements or definitions of exactly what is OK to wear. Since fashions change from place to place and time to time, this is not possible.
For example, several years ago Church guidelines said not to wear two-piece swimsuits. At that time, “two-piece swimsuits” meant bikinis, which are very revealing. Now fashion has changed, and some two-piece swimsuits are actually among the most modest swimsuits you can buy. They are better fitting and have longer tops that cover the torso. The bottoms come in more modest styles too. So the guideline not to wear a two-piece swimsuit is not as helpful as it once was, but the goal to dress modestly remains.
In sports, recreation, and all aspects of our lives, we need to practice the principle of modesty.
“Modesty is a gospel principle that applies to people of all cultures and ages. In fact, modesty is fundamental to being worthy of the Spirit. …
“… When we recognize our bodies as the gifts they are and when we understand the missions they help us fulfill, we protect and honor them by how we act and dress.
“In everyday living, immodest clothing such as short shorts, miniskirts, tight clothing, shirts that do not cover the stomach, and other revealing attire are not appropriate” (Robert D. Hales, “Modesty: Reverence for the Lord,” Ensign, Aug. 2008, 34–35).
Concerning modesty, it is best when we no longer ask, “How far can I go?” but rather, “How well can I follow gospel standards?”

I totally agree with this.
DeleteI am mexican/american, modeled for McCarty agency in Utah for a couple of years & used to wear two piece suits, but since joining the church at the age of 21 I no longer wore them. I am now 41 with three daughters, and a son, and I have to say that one piece suits are hottest. I can also show you a picture of my daughter at her homecoming/prom and she truly stands out in the picture because she is the only one wearing a modest dress. It's classy, and she doesn't need to show off her boobs...or bottom! There are only two members in her class of 350. She is graduating this year, and everyone knows her lifestyle, and people look up to her. They see that she lives up to her standards and doesn't lower them for anyone.
No matter if we have a rockin' hot body.
To me that is living a double standard.
You either stick to the modest values or you don't. I personally wouldn't justify wearing a bikini for one day at the beach. It's kind of like wearing a strapless gown just for one evening because you only have your senior prom once.
I don't judge because we all have a choice, and in the end it's to our own detriment as to how we live the gospel standards. No matter if we are 12, 20, or 40.
I only worry about myself, and how I am raising my girls.
Thanks for sharing.
I still love Nat the fat Rat though!
As several wise commenters already noted, Long Beach is really great.
ReplyDeleteyou. rock. that. swimsuit. you hear? whenever you want.
ReplyDeletefrom one mormon to another.
Oh no! You hit a car!? And was this the day Petey left us? Sigh. I'm so glad you got to go to the beach with your men. :-)
