A DAY AT THE ZOO

one of my very favorite things to do with huck is go to the central park zoo. it may not be very big, and there may not be a whole lot of animals to look at, but there is something so charming about that zoo that gets me every time.  it's like the little zoo that could.

last week hen and i decided we'd become patrons of the wildlife. i think that sounds right fancy! we walked down, waited on a very long line, and bought ourselves an annual pass to all of the city zoos. after all, the penguin room is climate controlled (not to mention stinky!) and it is going to be a long summer (knock on wood!). that pass was our first real family-outing type purchase, and i am not kidding, when i paid and they handed me henry's free t-shirt, i had one of those moments where i was suddenly a real mom.

a few photos from our holbrook 2012 inaugural mission to the zoo.
(warning, they're from last week when i REALLY sucked at my manual settings)

the little petting zoo (is really little)

and a shot from our walk home:

it's gonna be a real fine spring i'd say!

  1. This reminds me of the summer we lived by the zoo in salt lake and we bought a pass. Best summer of my life and such sweet memories of when we just had our little boy. So enjoy it!

  2. ah, the zoo. Is it weird that it is one of my favorite things to do and I'm not a mommy yet? Oh, and I wanted to tell you to keep up your manual setting skills! It is always intimidating at first, but pretty soon it will be second nature.

  4. Random question--I noticed that you say "on line" instead of "in line". Is this an eastern thing? I always thought it was British/European. Did you grow up saying on instead of in?

  5. Gollee you need a "like" button. (Not in connection with the Facebook evils, just...in general.) Cute post! One of my favorite things to do with the baby is reserve museum passes through the library, and then we can gain admission to climate-controlled environments for way reduced prices. We are in greater Boston area so th NYC sitch may be different, but it's a neat trick. And yeah, it makes me feel like such a Mom every time.

  6. How fun! We just went to the Bronx Zoo! That's actually where Madagasgar was! The Bronx Zoo is much funner. Cute pictures! Such beautiful weather here!

  7. my favorite thing about penguin exhibits is that they are almost always paired off in twos. like little lovers!

  8. Love the Madagascar reference - one of my faves! And yes - it's so disappointing that they use the Central Park Zoo as the zoo in the movie and it's definitely not as exciting in real life. I love the penguins though!

  15. a day at the zoo--I remember those days when I was a kid, but I haven't been a zoo in far too long. My and the husband made our first family outing purchase a while ago--An annual pass to all the royal palaces in London, there are five and Buckingham palace is not included, shame--and it made and still makes us so happy, particularly me, I mean I have seen Henry VIII like three times--yes I know he is an actor but it is still exciting--and yes I am a history geek.

Sorry this comment is so long.

  16. I truly enjoy going to the zoo. Sometimes the smallest zoos have the most charm. I am imagining a wonderful summer

  17. There actually used to be lions and elephants and such at that zoo, but they were kept in menagerie cages and when the zoo was renovated in the 80s, those animals were moved to the bronx zoo to more natural-like exhibits.

  18. Does that mean you're pregnant? (The "long summer, knock on wood" thing?)
