A VERY MERRY UNBIRTHDAY!

huck turned seventeen months old last week. ohhh, break my heart why don't you. it's true the more i look at him: friend is not much of a baby anymore. he's becoming a person. filled with his own thoughts, and learning (very slowly) how to be polite and wait his turn and behave like a gentleman. i'm just so proud of him. i'm proud of how kind and sweet and lovely he is. i'm so proud of his little boy body, how fast he can run (and how his cheeks jiggle with each thunderous baby stomp), and how beautifully his little mind works. i'm proud that he's mine. it seems that now is when the real work starts. babies are one thing. i can do babies with two eyes shut. but i feel a little challenged by toddlerhood, in a good way. i'm ready to take you on, twos.

to celebrate huck's unbirthday (and because we really had nothing else going on), we decided to run over to alice's tea cup for a spot o' tea and a little pumpkin scone. i know i know, a table full of delicate china and steaming hot tea is probably not the smartest place for a bustling on-the-move kinda guy, but huck was quite careful. we didn't need to leave a monster tip to make up for any huge messes, either. (beeteedubs that pumpkin scone, WOAH.)

next time you're in the city:
columbus avenue and 73rd street
dress your little girls in fairy wings for the full experience.
(on a tip, i tried the herbal detox blend. it was good.)

  3. I'll confess that this Tim Burton fan was a wee bit disappointed in the newest "Alice." Johnny's sexy wasn't even a possibility in that movie!!! The animated "Alice" is one of my three all-time Disney faves ("The Little Mermaid" and "Sleeping Beauty" rounding out my trifecta). I have a collection of drawings from the original book "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" in the girls' room in the hope that they one day catch the vision. Someday I'll display their teacup collection from Great Grandma as well, and we'll have unbirthday celebrations in style! Huck's invited, of course, along with his sassy mama.

  8. I love Alice's. Everytime we are in NYC we have to go each morning for a pumpkin scone. :) My 5 year old loves the fairy dust which now is sprinkled all over the inside of our car. :)

  9. My son will be 17 months on the 12th & I couldn't agree more! You don't realize how "easy" you have it with an infant, you think the world is ending bc of the lack of sleep.. Then comes 15 months... Walking, Running, Tantrums, Getting into mischief.. Lack of sleep is the least of it, haha. With all this also comes great little moments like you said, watching your little one take on their own personality! Give kisses, call you "mama" & learn something new every day! Parenting is a tough job but wouldn't trade it for the world! Love reading your blog! it's nice when people are honest, and can admit that it can be trying sometimes & it's not always just sunshine, rainbows & snuggles..

  10. First off, I love those mason jar glasses (oh my, the actual name of them escapes me!) I've seen those before and had totally forgotten that had existed. I must make some my own.

I asked my mother one time if it ever gets easier (during the throes of "terrible twos" (which are not terrible)) Her response still rings so true today and my children are 11 and 8: It doesn't get easier, it just gets different! What challenges and goals they are hitting and acheiving will morph into different challenges and different goals. Things that were once thought impossible to teach are now easy and a new set of lessons sprung forward. :)

Guess that's the whole point though, right?

  11. Awww isn't it fun to see our LOs turn into little people with personalities and opinions? I ADORE Alice's Tea Cup and it was one of the first places a dear friend took me to when I first moved to NYC 5 years ago. I had my bridal shower there too and it was so fun! I look forward to taking my little sister for the first time next weekend for her 24th birthday!

  12. What a fun little outing! Huck is such a cutie. Happy unbirthday to him! You are such an adorable mama. I love seeing all of your cute little outings. The hubby, baby and I are heading to the city in a few weeks. I think we may just have to make a stop here for a little tea party. SO cute!! xo

  14. Our babies are almost the exact same age! I'm excited to celebrate his half a birthday next month, but probably won't be going anywhere as cute as this.
Plus I agree with you about the freakiness that was Alice in Wonderland. Too much about that movie was just not right.

  15. So fun! My grandmother used to take me to teahouses in California growing up and I just loved it. Toddlerhood also keeps me on my toes, in a good way!
