sally, someone is staring at you in personal growth.
of all the meg ryan movies, when harry met sally is my second favorite. it is also the most dated, and weirdly, the most on-trend. when sally walks through the park with harry and all those leaves . . . i want that entire outfit. and then i realized, thanks to the magic of urban outfitters, i basically have that entire outfit. in my closet. probably we all do right now.
so let's investigate this properly. (i'm missing photos from her 1977/1982 days because my camera was in the other room and i hadn't yet caught the vision that was to become this, this incredibly amazing and thought-provoking post.)
right.
fisherman's sweater
high waisted denim
academic blazer
cross body bag.
american museum of natural history.
check.
peplum blazer? is that a peplum blazer?
AND I THINK THAT WOMAN IS WEARING HONEYSUCKLE, COLOR OF 2011.
high waisted pleated trousers!
waiter, there is too much pepper in my paprikash.
but i would be proud to partake of your tweedy blazer.
and what do you want to bet all the hipsters in williamsburg are already hanging
their oversized nerd glasses from their necks like that?
THIS IS AMAZING HAIR.
(i haven't actually seen this make a comeback yet.) (BUT IT'S COMING)
(i have seen this hair, though, on the middle schoolers. and it is confusing.)
minus the mock turtleneck, I HAVE THIS WHOLE OUTFIT.
only my pants aren't baggy.
(junk in the trunk).
now that's cute.
are you looking for some great summer dresses? i may have found you some!
my favorite places to shop for sir hucklepuss,
aaaand huck's blog!
(p.s. i updated my "shop" tonight. have a look!)
i'd run in those red/black spandexes any day. while sporting the meg ryan NYE hair, of course.
ReplyDeletehehe this is so funny! I haven't seen that movie, but I love oldies!

Yay Sally. Love her style. Love you, too, Natalie. My godmother worked at Nordstrom in the early 90s. In the fancy pants department. This winter she gave me all her fancy pants suits, silk blouses and pleated trousers. I died. I'm so happy all this stuff is back in style, may it stay forever, because I am never ever going to have the money to buy YSL for myself. Yay for fairy godmothers.
ReplyDeleteWhen Harry Met Sally is the best!! I love that you love Meg Ryan movies because I do too. Sleepless in Seattle is probably my favourite but I really love You've Got Mail too. I want her apartment from that movie and of course her children's bookstore :) Great fashion and great post!
ReplyDeleteMegan @ Storybook Love Affair
I thought of you today. Joe versus Volcano is tv tonight in australia... thought I'd give it a look:)
ReplyDeleteMust watch this again!
ReplyDeleteKate and Leopold is on hulu. I like that one kinda, have you seen it? xo
ReplyDeletepleeeeeaase post pics of you in Harry met Sally fashion :)
ReplyDeleteBahahahah! Love it. I mean, just love it!
ReplyDeletea little giveaway over here:

I need to watch this after this post! So amazing, and so so true. I want to wear it all.
ReplyDeleteHi Natalie - Sorry to ask a question not relevant to this post, but I have been curious for a long time (not trying to be rude, I swear!): Even though you are Mormon, you drink caffeinated beverages? I really know nothing about Mormonism, so this confuses me. Thanks in advance for your response, and keep up the great work on the blog! (My husband likes it too, hmmmm . . . )
ReplyDeleteSo I was watching buffy the vampire slayer the other day and had the same thoughts about allyson hannigan's outfits. She's supposed to be all nerdy and then...peter pan collars! and geometric patterned sweaters!
ReplyDeleteI wish that hair would come into fashion, only then could I make peace with it
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun post!
ReplyDeleteOh how I love Meg Ryan in her prime!
ReplyDeleteLove this post! Fashion can be awfully ironic. Good thing we can always count on Meg to light the way. :)

greatest.post.ever......i think i have said that on a few of your posts, and if not i have thought it!
ReplyDeleteI can't believe I've never seen this film! I know the most famous scenes but have yet to see the entire thing. And you're so right, it's like the Twilight Zone! We know it's over 20 years old, but it looks so 2012!
ReplyDelete"i have seen this hair, though, on the middle schoolers. and it is confusing."
ReplyDeletelaughed out loud. literally.
Sadly, my hair looks exactly like Meg's. And no, it hasn't made a comeback.
ReplyDeletethat "middle school" hair screams "cher from clueless" to me...
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, this is hilarious. I wonder if people realise that they're channeling Sally. Truth be told this post mostly made me go IWANTOBEINNYCIWANTTOBEINNYCIWANTTOBEINNYC. Haha.
ReplyDeleteThis made me laugh so hard! I feel like fashion is revisiting the 80's, in an updated way. Skinny acid wash jeans? Jeggings! Baggy sweatshirts? Loose fitting tops! Sweatband? Head band with cute flower on it!
ReplyDeleteI.LOVE.THIS.MOVIE.
ReplyDeletefashion is cyclical. maybe i should save my stuff and wait for it to come around next time...

I don't even know how I found your blog, but I love it and you crack me up. Your "You've Got Mail" comments slay me. Best.Movie.Ever. And When Harry Met Sally is my favorite movie of all time. This was hysterical. I wish I lived in NYC and could sport some of these retro fashions. (that they are retro makes me feel very old) I live in boring CT, however and cannot. Because people would stare and wonder where I dug up the scrunchie. Anyway, you rock.
ReplyDeleteLOVE her. Watched Kate and Leopold over the weekend, she is just so sweet.
ReplyDeleteokay, seriously, this movie always makes me so happy! and i never made the comparison of the amazing attire. you are so dead on. and that last shot? brilliant! especially with the hip swagger, ha
ReplyDeletexo TJ
Middle schoolers DO have big hair. It's quite disarming.
ReplyDeleteLoved this post.
Oh my goodness, this is too perfect. I'm going to have to re-watch the movie to revel in the wardrobe first hand. I think that Joe Versus the Volcano is my favorite Meg Ryan movie. A Meg Marathon sounds like just the right idea for an upcoming weekend.
ReplyDeleteThis is very funny. I have that entire top outfit, too!
