it's kind of a joke in our house that i am a starter, not a finisher. i get all these grand ideas but i never follow through. i don't have the patience for anything, but i sure am good at thinking up stuff! i'm also good at slapping it together and then being very generous with myself and overlooking obvious mistakes and still thinking it looks nice, you know, if you squint just so.
my mom is a perfectionist. hospital corners with the flat sheets (brandon and i don't even own flat sheets), hanging drapes correctly instead of however seems easiest, and getting all sorts of what i'd call "permanent stains" out of things that i'd sworn were goners using just her elbow grease and fierce determination.
last week we decorated a cake together at make meaning, and what i mean by that is that i threw fondant at the cake and then my mom came in behind me and made it perfect, until we had something quite pretty at the end. no squinting required.
huck was there too, mainly to oversee things and eat frosting and model the latest in fondant mustachios.
while my mother was putting the finishing touches on the cake, i threw together a little painted platter.
if you squint just right it looks amaaaazing.
thanks for having us, make meaning!
Oh my goodness your Mom is adorable! Now I see where you get all your prettiness from :) xo
ReplyDeleteOh wow your Mum is SOO beautiful! Your cake and plate are lovely too :)
ReplyDeleteThat cake is so cute! And so is your platter, no squinting necessary!
ReplyDeleteHow do you not own flat sheets?
That cake is AMAZING. Your mom is beautiful (as are you!), and Huck is too cute. xo!
ReplyDeletei'd buy that plate :)
ReplyDeleteok, that place sounds amazing, and that cake is absolutely gorgeous! wow!
ReplyDeleteI'm totally the same way I start a huge project and then get bored and just start throwing things together, and you totally have to squint real hard. Good thing we have moms to make us better, and little boys to make us smile.
ReplyDeleteThe picture of her holding the cake and Huck smiling at her is just priceless.
ReplyDeleteI thought I was the only one who didn't use flat sheets! I use fitted ones and a comfy blanket, but who needs a sheet that keeps your feet trapped in all tight at the bottom of the bed? Our feet need freedom!
ReplyDeletethat cake is beautiful!! and that plate is awesome too!
ReplyDeletei love your blog!
GAH! That photo of Huck with the 'stache? Adorable.
ReplyDeleteYou're mother is darling, I see where you get it.
ReplyDeleteThe cake turned out wonderful! I find that crafty or tedious things (like putting fondant on a cake) frustrate my inner perfectionist. ;)

Oh, I think you and your Huck may have discovered a higher calling for fondant-- why little mustachios for little bambinos of course! =)

Embarrassing fact: I am currently using a flat sheet on my bed in place of a fitted sheet. Not cute.
ReplyDeleteBut what is cute: Your adorable cake and platter. Seriously, give me that platter!
well, i don't even know what a flat sheet is, so...
ReplyDeleteYour plate looks FAB! Also, great work on the cake. I'm a disaster when it comes to stuff like that, so kudos to you and your team for making it pretty.
ReplyDeletehuck is just too dang adorable.
ReplyDeletewe dont use flat sheets either! so glad we arent the only ones.
ReplyDeleteaw, i think it looks great even without squinting :)
ReplyDeleteand huck's mustache?? perfect!
xo TJ
Um...can you be more amazing? xoox
ReplyDeleteKatie is serving with the Great and Amazing Julie on a road show production right now, and when I asked her how it was going, she said, "Oh, I LOVE working with Julie! She is just so enthusiastic and everything she does turns out amazing." Your mom is a superhero of a woman--everyone knows it! And you're a chip off the old block, Natalie. Really and truly.
ReplyDeleteMy mother is also a fan of hospital corners. My flat sheet lives crumbled at the end of the bed. Don't ask why I go through the trouble of making my bed with it!

ReplyDeleteYour mama is so pretty! And that cake is unlike anything I've seen before - LOVE!
ReplyDeleteHa. Sounds like you described my mom and me. We actually made a slip cover together. Not just one where you throw a sheet over it. Perfectly custom fit cover that looks like it was the original fabric. I would have just thrown it together once I lost patience (which doesn't take that long). She made every detail perfect. The project took FOREVER, but I'm glad we (she) did it!
ReplyDeletethat looks amazing! i've got to go there and try this out. and i love your platter - no squinting.
ReplyDeleteThose mustaches on your little man are too adorable!
ReplyDeleteI love the picture of huck smiling so big at your mom while she shows off the cake. So cute. You can see how much he is loving grandma time!
