for huck's big birthday last week, we took him to see the big apple circus.
(blurry, but hilarious)
afterward we ran home for cake and candles and presents and tubs and bed.
all in all, it was a pretty good day to be king henry.
and now, a little bit about henry holbrook on this his second anniversary of rocking our socks off:
- things huck likes to point out on our walks: "giants!" at the park (yes, those would be statues), fire trucks, puppies, all the puppies, and he also has a keen sense of where all the playgrounds are relative to his exact location and when we're in the area (or if we're close to church where he loves to go to nursery) he'll cry out in horror if we don't go there straight away.
- you know that one part of dumbo when dumbo starts flying and huck shouts at the top of his lungs from the ottoman, "he fwying! he fwying!" that's the best part of anything.
- speaking of, until you have seen henry holbrook flapping his wings and "fwying" from his stroller for a big kid who has his attention, you've never lived.
- huck has the craziest attention span of any two-year-old i've ever known. we felt pretty confident that he'd make it the full two plus hours at the circus, and even after refusing a nap that day he was focused and well behaved. i'm starting to think maybe this kid is some kind of hero.
- huck loves himself a good taco. seriously, slap anything between a tortilla and call it a taco and he'll eat it happily. "tato!"
- there is nothing sweeter in this world than the way huck says "ohh-tayyyy" when you ask him if he'd like something. oh gosh, melts my heart dead. the emphatic "no!"s are less fun, but even then i'm so in love with this new, english-speaking huck i've got here that i don't even mind. there's really nothing better than asking your kid a question and then getting a glimpse into how his little brain is working.
- huck shows no sign of slowing down on the nursing. the boy loves to nurse. i love it too, so we've decided to keep on.
- wiping our face is the rudest. when he was a baby he loved having his face wiped but i guess nothing gold can stay.
- huck loves to brush his teeth, put on socks, try on daddy's shoes, and steal mom's underwear fresh from the dryer and wear it on his head. when i change his diaper he likes to hold the fresh diaper for me until i'm ready for it. sometimes he'll lay it dramatically over his face and say, "duck!" (only some of his diapers have ducks on them, but the ducks are apparently quite memorable.)
- huck feeds himself three-quarters of a yogurt cup for breakfast every morning, positively hates scrambled eggs, but like any good new yorker can do quick work of an egg and cheese on a bagel from the corner deli.
- he loves animals, making animal sounds, and especially enjoys animal toys that are small enough to fit in his chubby fists so they can accompany us on our daily errands around the city.
- huck likes a good slice of pizza as much as his mama (so, a lot).
- but he hates going into the j.crew passionately.
- huck has a surprisingly dry little sense of humor. he pulls these faces at me, right on the money, it's amazing. my favorite is the frown-smile when he finds something funny that he knows he shouldn't find funny. and i'm like, kid! where are you getting this from?! his comedic timing is pretty spectacular. the next couple years with this guy are going to be pretty flipping hilarious.
oh, huck. you're it, kid. all of it.
and thus concludes the huck portion of holbrook birthday season,
as well as the entire birthday season of 2012.
see ya next year, birthdays!
happy birthday to him! and i have no idea how you can keep your chairs white with a 2 year old. tips & tricks? send em my way.

ReplyDeleteDARLING DARLING DARLING! all of it. How i loved reading about your little sweetheart -- listening to my daughter's words when she really began talking was just about the coolest thing in the universe.
ReplyDeleteI find myself wanting to be Huck for a day, because what an adventure that would be. I think that's really important, as a parent, to give your kids adventures. I try to instill that spirit in mine. Great job.
ReplyDeleteThis post, this entire blog really, is just about the ultimate grand supremo in gifts you could give to your son. Can you even imagine having something like this from your mother? Something to read and look at and see how much you were loved and cherished and how full and exciting and adventurous you made the days, even when you were so little? He is going to love this one day. Love.
ReplyDeleteYour writing is so beautiful. My Little Man just turned a year old this past week and your stories make me even more excited for what is to come!

ReplyDeleteSo fun to read. LIttle Huck seems like a riot.
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday Huck! I love the little faces he makes. :) I have a little one who is almost two and he gives me some of the SAME looks that I see in your pictures of Huck. ha! And we are definitely in the "NO!" phase. Sometimes I'm not even saying anything and he just runs over and shouts "NO!" But with this cute little pouty face of course.
ReplyDeleteIf you ever want to delve into what it will be like with two, feel free to check out my blog! Two boys, littlest one is almost 2 months. Fun times indeed.

Dear Natalie,
ReplyDeleteI like to begin my notes (can't remember the word she uses)to you as if we're already in the middle of a conversation, as opposed to what we actually are....
There are moments when you really make me want to fastforward to the part of life when I get to record the memories I want to keep forever of my future babies. This was one of those moments.
I've been here for a few years now and remember your struggles to get Huck. I distinctly remember the day you announced you were pregnant...I got choked up. Which is weird, if you think about it, since we are strangers...
All this is to say...I look at you and how you appreciate life and it makes me realize there are so many good things about the present and so many good things to come.
Thanks...
xoxo
Steph
