our ward here in manhattan is pretty nuts. it's filled with insanely talented people. for our ward party, a photographer in the ward generously brought all his photography equipment with him so he could take professional-style santa portraits of all the kids.
while we waited on line, huck and i discussed santa. now, brandon and i aren't quite sure how we want to approach this whole idea of santa with our kids... i mean, it's not like we want to be overly grinchy or anything, but we also don't want to make a big fuss over it. (this is coming from someone who was pretty convinced the whole thing was bunk from day one.) so, we were discussing it, huck and i, and i was pointing out the other kids ahead of us who were sitting on santa's lap, smiling for the camera, life goes on, etc. huck had the sweetest little smile on his face. he knows santa from rudolph the red nosed reindeer, and when my renditions of christmas carols get overly operatic around the house he likes to shout, "NO SANTA, MAMA." he loved watching the other kids sit with santa, so i had real high hopes, you know.
but see, huck didn't just dislike santa. he hated santa. like no one has ever hated anything in this lifetime. huck's face quickly went from mild displeasure to straight up RAGE. i stood there in awe while mark, ever the professional, snapped and snapped and snapped. huck just got angrier and angrier. the minute he looked at me with this look like, INTERFERE, MOM, i stepped in and said okay, that's enough, and gave him a kiss and told him he was so brave. but before then, i mean, we were all pretty much crying from laughing.
my favorite shot:
ANGER!
Aw! Poor Huck!! I love how kids are literally all smiles in the line to see Santa and then burst into tears when the moment for the picture arrives.
ReplyDeleteThis is priceless! Way better than happy pictures!
ReplyDeleteAtta boy, he didn't even drop the candy cane & lollipop. ;)
ReplyDeletehe's a professional! ;)
DeleteDo you go to the same church as Naomi Davis? Looks like the same Santa from her pics! These are adorable!
ReplyDeletehaha, yep. same ward party!
DeleteI was gonna say the same thing- small bloggy world!
DeleteHi! Love reading your blog - this might be crazy, but I think I know your Santa! Noah??? I went to school with him!
ReplyDeletegood eye! i couldn't even tell who it was at first under that beard!
Deletehe will love these photos when he's got kids of his own.
ReplyDeleteI love how even Santa is about to laugh. That could blow a guy's cover! Ha ha.
ReplyDeleteLol. We visited Santa this weekend too, and fully expected to get similar photos. I love his yellow pants!
ReplyDeletePretty much every kid hates/is scared to death of Santa at 2 years. It doesn't mean he hates Santa forever. Let him believe! I didn't believe very long either, but my kids believe and it is SO FUN.
ReplyDeleteThis gave me a good little giggle! I mean, I feel sad for him that he's so upset, but I'm sure someday he'll look back and giggle too.
ReplyDeleteAlso, his little sweater is too cute.
poor baby...
ReplyDeletehahahaha! Too funny.
ReplyDeletei'm literally laughing out loud! poor baby!
ReplyDeletei feel so bad for kids that dont like being on santa's lap... but they are THEE absolute best photos, in my opinion. and i love that he's double fisting candy!
ReplyDeleteHave been enjoying similar photos from friends appearing on my Facebook feed. I would ask my Mum if I liked Santa at this age but she has pretty much blocked out our entire baby-hood. It was very traumatic as she's not a baby person!
ReplyDeletelove his little reindeer sweater - at least he looks cute and stylin while upset. and i mean, that's all that really matters anyway...
ReplyDeleteHAHA oh man did this make me laugh. I thought you were sort of exaggerating but the more I scrolled the more I believed you. Huck was just NOT gonna have it. These are awesome haha maybe you should make this your Christmas card ;) And his outfit is super cute!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the laugh tonight, these are just hilarious...I love the amusement in Santa's eyes. Too bad Huck didn't find it as funny as the rest of us! Also, took a quick look over at Mark Weinberg's photography website....amazing.
ReplyDeleteOH MY GOODNESS . I just about peed my pants . So stinkin' hilarious and CUTE .

Hahaha!!! Cute but funny photos ;D
ReplyDeleteUgh I believed in Santa until I was twelve. How embarrassing! Anywho, love your blog!
ReplyDeletei died from laughter over this. too funny!
ReplyDeleteI know he is SO upset, but these pictures are A-MAZE-ING. They look so professional, your photographer is amazing.
ReplyDeleteomg, that face...how funny. it's sad and adorable all at the same time.
ReplyDeleteThe photos are AMAZING!! Seriously amazing. Sorry to hear Huck wasn't that impressed, he's a similar age to my niece and she wouldn't have a bar of Santa this year either. Meh. Better luck next year.
ReplyDeleteclassic! our little Stevie did something almost identical. http://www.thismomsgonnasnap.com
ReplyDeleteHow did Sassy Brunette + Redbeard the Brave = Malfoy blonde child? Genetics are weird.
ReplyDeleteOn that note, I bet Malfoy loathes Santa too.
REDBEARD THE BRAVE!!! :)
DeleteOh my heck...you just want to scoop him up and give him a hug! The torture!
ReplyDeleteGosh it's hilarious how much you can't help laughing when a baby is weeping over something ridiculous! :-)
ReplyDeleteI feel like a bad person, but I think that sad/angry santa photos are SO much cooler than happy ones! This year is my baby's first, and the look of skepticism on his face cracks me up so much more than a happy smile would have!
ReplyDeletemost kids hate santa. I have four kids and always one petrified of santa so I have to be in the photo too.. with the scared kid leaning as far out of shot as possible ;)
ReplyDeletemy husband and I wanted the glory for the gifts :) and we decided we wouldnt be big on santa and its no problem. Though we were lucky. Our first daughter was 9 months her first christmas (so no idea about anything) 1 and half next christmas - so still just a few presents and a couple glimpses at a santa... but by the next christmas she could talk a house down and she just instinctively knew santa wasnt real... so we were off the hook by 3 years old!! yee har....
funily enough my 5 year old 3rd child claims santa to be real even though its discussed openly in this house that he is not... so I let her believe whatever she wants!
we arent santa grinches too much - we love santa books and movies and discuss the real santa etc, but I choose not to decorate too much with him and focus on nativities and other pretty stuff, I will say that at first I went {and still do} go overboard with other family traditions {sleeping under the tree, sewing christmas pillowcases for 'good christmas dreams', grandparents christmas dinner, making gingerbread houses, we make lots of advent calendars etc etc} as I was worried not having the 'magic of santa' could make the day anti climatic and I love to celebrate the whole month not just the day the fat man comes!
wow what a lot to say over not believing in santa! and I Love those photos!
We missed our ward party. Boo. But the library is having a Christmas party for story time tomorrow. Santa is coming. Last year my son sat on Santa's lap no problem. But he was also 10 months old. Nothing is a big deal at that age. He didn't even notice. He's almost 2 now. I'm pretty sure it is going to be epic. But, he's surprised me before. Who knows?
ReplyDeleteHuck looks so cute mad!
All my kiddos was frightened by Santa too and never wanted to take the candies he gave to them...But your photos are wonderful^^
ReplyDeleteThis kid has the best facial expressions!!
ReplyDeleteOMG!! so adorable...poor little thing!! love all the photos! my boys were the same way so I just didnt bother and now they are just not interested in taking photos with Santa...
ReplyDeletethese pictures are hilarious! huck has so much personality :)
ReplyDeleteSo expressive, even in anger! He is the cutest and I love his grandpa sweater.
ReplyDeleteThat is so hilarious! Even angry he's adorable! This year my 5-year-old daughter and 17-month-old son gladly went to Santa, posing for pictures and gabbing away about presents (or in gibberish in my son's case). My 3-year-old daughter, on the other hand was NOT having it! When I suggested I could stand with her while she told the Santa what she hoped to receive for Christmas, she was so against seeing him that she yelled "I don't want ANY presents!" and ran away! You know it's bad when no presents is better than having to talk to the big guy with the white beard! =)
ReplyDeletehaha oh he even makes the best i hate santa faces. So sad that kids freaking out about santa is SO funny... sad but true!
ReplyDeleteThat second to last photo. But torcher / most adorable thing ever! Poor Huck! He's going to love these when he gets older ;)
ReplyDeletexo TJ
this. is. amazing. i have no other words.
ReplyDeleteMy daughter had a similar experience. In her Santa photo, she looks like she is being sucked into a vortex on his lap! At least little Huck looks adorable while crying still! :)
ReplyDeleteAwww! Telling though that in the depths of despair he did not let go of the lollipop + candy cane!
ReplyDeleteIs it terrible that I find it hilarious and ironic how often children are terrified of Santa? What is it that is so terrifying? Maybe if more children's fathers had beards . . .

So funny! I think it's even better than if he would have had a nice happy smile on his face! GREAT photos!
ReplyDeleteThese are the most amazing Santa pictures I've ever seen. I love how he still has a grip on the candy!
ReplyDeleteHey I know Mark Weinberg! A friend of my sister's. He is very talented. These photos... The last one especially... I say Ellen worthy.
ReplyDeleteSanta doesn't seem to offended!
