just like that, out of the blue. it was HUGE. it was like the earth stopped spinning and the room stood still and i just grinned like a loon. it made me so goofy the rest of the afternoon. and then i asked him to say it again. like, three times. the third time he kind of looked at me like, MOM.
to mark the occasion,
a photo of henny on the first day i said i love you
a photo of henny on the first day i said i love you
and a photo of henny on the first day he said it back.
your mama loves you too, ya turkey.

So magical! He really is growing up so fast. I've been reading this blog since shortly after he was born... it doesn't feel like it's been that long.
ReplyDeleteAh! What a sweet little moment and memory. You go, mama. :)

ReplyDeleteThat's the best - I can't wait to hear it from my little guy - you'll have to record that!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI remember so well when my daughter began to say that to me. And now she is about to turn 7. And you know what? IT STILL SLAYS ME EVERY TIME SHE SAYS IT. Every. Single. Time.
ReplyDeletewell sure, just make my heart swell up with love. no big deal at all. gah. okay i'll go tell my momma i love her now.

ReplyDeleteAw Natalie that's so lovely.
ReplyDeleteoh my heart. I'm going to be a puddle of tears when the Bean says those three little (big) words to me! xoxo
ReplyDeleteAh, what a wonderful moment! This is the best part about blogging - being able to look back in ten years and see exactly how it happened.
ReplyDeleteSuch a lovely moment. I wish I'd done this the first time my little boy told me!
ReplyDeletei've always loved that photo of you right after having him. and what a sweet memory to be able to recount (and it made me teary-eyed, too). i'm glad january is almost over, and i hope 2013 brings you everything you could dream of natalie.
ReplyDeletethis has made me tear so goodness kniws what i will be like when my baby girl says it back to me :)
ReplyDeleteit is really the best feeling. And heartbreaking, just like you say. Maybe even more so when you're hurting so much to have another little love that isn't such a big growing little man. But hold the good feeling in your heart Mama. My guy is a bit older, and we go back and forth saying "no no no, i love you to the moon and back and more more more!" it's quite a competition, really ;)
ReplyDeleteOh, how much I love your blog. You are so inspiring and make me excited for motherhood one day. Thanks for sharing such intimate moments :)

The best.
ReplyDeleteSuch a swirl of emotions. I like that your feelings were "proud and bitter." I sort of had my first "my baby is getting too big" moment last week. It was a stinging slap in the face. These 23 months have been a blur of her doing one amazing thing after another. I've been so in awe of her and it was all so exciting; but I woke her up from a nap the other day, and she was just sitting there, looking so big. I was choking on tears and terror of her being grown up all of a sudden.
And yet. She was still the most amazing thing in the world, and everything she did that day and the next day was this incredible new discovery.
Oh my goodness.. how very special! He is growing up into such a thoughtful sweetheart. Good job Momma!
ReplyDeleteAnd so good of you to mark this momentous occasion with photos.
P.S. Really digging your little Vine clips!
Every once in a while, my husband and I will discuss whether we think our 9-month-old daughter really loves us or just depends on us or just thinks we are fun to be around. We've come to the conclusion that even though she can't voice it quite yet, we know she loves us. What a special moment for Huck to finally voice how he feels about his momma. Thanks for sharing this!
ReplyDeleteThat is so sweet! I tear up a tiny bit everytime my lil tot says it too. I never want that to end.
ReplyDeleteXOXO

Well now, THAT has to make your January just a little bit better. So precious.
ReplyDeleteBaha! He made the same facial expression in the last post as you did in the photo with baby Henry. I LOVE IT. :) I follow you guys (cause, ya know, you and Huck are so intertwined I include him, too) on Instagram and his big boy legs have been crushing my heart these last few weeks. It's seriously like I went to check my feed and *poof* the most adorably chubby toddler in NYC is now a strapping young lad, with long thin legs.
ReplyDeleteso sweet!! my daughter recently started saying i love you too and it kills me dead every single time! one of the best and most memorable moments to date!
