my friend isabelle, who takes beautiful photos and happens to be featured in the upcoming vanity fair... just a little brag for a friend... (also her husband is a musician on tour with "the justin bieber of the united kingdom" a description which never fails to make me happy), texted me on tuesday afternoon to see if i'd be free that night to see THE HEIRESS with her. comped tickets to see a golden globe winner and THE matthew crawley!
the stars aligned and brandon was able to make it home early that night, so i made it to the theatre just in time to take my seat before the lights dimmed. can i just say, living in walking distance of the theatre district is straight up magic.
i didn't know anything about the play other than who would be performing that night, so i was completely unprepared for how much i would love it. it is a gorgeously done one-set show. very sad but also strangely empowering. all the stage effects were subtle and beautiful, i was captivated the entire time. the house is small and very intimate, so it was easy to get lost in the story and the acting. as much as i love musical theatre i don't actually always like sitting through musical theatre. but i've never not loved sitting through a play. so if you come to town and hope to see something on broadway, don't forget the plays!
on my way out of there i happened to bump into this guy. and for those of you who are caught up to the end of downton season three already, don't worry. i told him on behalf of all of us how freaking wrong that christmas special was. i mean, i'm still like, COME ONNNNNNNN.
by the way. he's quite tall.
thank you isabelle for thinking of me and bringing me along!
and hey don't i look JUST LIKE lady mary?
I seriously didn't even believe that ending! I gasped so loud that I scared my husband haha I was so mad. So cool you got to meet him! He looks so dapper with his modern hair cut! haha
ReplyDeleteYou practically ARE Lady Mary in this photo!
ReplyDeleteWho is the JB of the UK? Colour me intrigued…cause I'm Irish and couldn't put a finger on who that'd be!
ReplyDeleteConor Maynard I think??
DeleteSooooo JEALOUS! I never cried so hard during Downton then I did during the Season 3 Christmas special!

I am dying to know who the JB of the UK is, I'm British & have no idea whatsoever!!!
ReplyDeleteWasn't "The Heiress" INCREDIBLE?! Saw it while in NYC in October and absolutely loved it. Jessica Chastain is phenomenal!!! I loved how she and Dan were so willing to meet the crowd at the stage door after the show, too. Total highlight of the trip. I'm glad you gave him a hard time about that, because SERIOUSLY?!?! Killer!!! I was relieved to read it was his choice and not the writers, but still. Dreadful.
ReplyDeleteI have always loved this story...you should watch the film with Olivia de Haviland sometime (I probably spelled her name wrong...sorry!) What a fun evening!
ReplyDeleteI am crazy, stupid jealous. JEALOUS. Sounds like such a great break from reality.
ReplyDeleteNo way! Lucky girl, you!
ReplyDeletemuch lovelier than Lady Mary! Glad you had a nice evening!
ReplyDeleteEeeeeeeeek! So exciting! I love Downton!!
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you about the play - it was so lovely! And I went totally ga-ga over seeing Cousin Matthew! I posted some pics too: http://youplusmeforalways.blogspot.com/2012/10/cousin-matthew-crawley.html
ReplyDeleteAnd you are totally the American version of Lady Mary! ;)
You do look JUST like Lady Mary. Uncanny. And Matthew is a lucky guy ;)
ReplyDeleteSuch fun to be had in that big city of yours.
Cheers!
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
ReplyDeleteSuper jealous! Not only was the Christmas special ridiculous, but I wrote my master's thesis on Henry James and so I spent a l.o.t. of time studying this particular adaptation of Washington Square. When I heard it was on Broadway I was so excited! Maybe if it does really well it will come to Chicago and my part of the world...
ReplyDeleteso so so so so so lucky! i'm really happy for you! thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteYou met Matthew Crawley!!! That's VERY exciting! VERY, I tell you! I'm also wondering who the JB of the UK is... Hmmmmm
ReplyDeleteso mad at him still for the christmas special.
ReplyDeleteOk, that was pretty exciting!
ReplyDeleteI feel so left out - I need to start watching Downton Abbey asap.
ReplyDeleteI have never commented before and can't believe that I'm doing it now, just to tell you about my audible squeal when I saw that last photo. I am really happy that this happened to you.
ReplyDeleteEver since I saw this instagram pic I have been DYING FOR THE STORY!!! I am looking online NOW to get tickets!!! You're a gem!
ReplyDeleteOh. My. Word. I am so unbelievably jealous, there are not even words to express my jealousy. Can we be besties???
ReplyDeleteOMG!!!! Love Matthew Crawley. Want to see this play. You are one lucky lady.
ReplyDeleteMatthew Crawley in the flesh?! BEYOND jealous of this entire experience! You have no idea. Your gal pal must reeeally love you ;)
ReplyDeleteWHHHHAAAT? I totally just geeked out over here. What am I saying? I am STILL geeking out! It's THE Matthew Craw-laaay!
ReplyDeleteSoooo jealous! I'm glad you had a fantastic time.
ReplyDeleteBut I must know...how did he respond when you told him we were all disappointed with that joke of a Christmas special? Did he apologize? Blame it all on Julian Fellows (whom I still maintain is responsible, by the way). Details! We need details! :)
So jealous!!
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, the ending of season 3 is so so wrong!! I'm so mad about it! :)
Justin Beiber of the UK,I believe, is the very cute (and 11 years yuonger than me) Conor Maynard - though seeing his face when the comparsion is mentioned in an interview is hilarious - not impressed at all.
ReplyDeleteYou are correct! Though I think the only similarity is that they rose to fame through YouTube covers. It's all hilarious to me :)
DeleteThank you! I had no idea who the UK Biebs was meant to be!
DeleteHe was funny on Never Mind the Buzzcocks though.
I've never heard of that show, but it sounds great on name alone!! I'm going to have to look this up...
DeleteMy heart is beating so fast.... *sigh* I still can't believe he's gone for good. So fun you have a picture with! Pretty sure I'd frame is and put it on my night stand next to my husband ha... just kidding. Did he have a sexy british accent and everything?
ReplyDeleteWAIT WHAT??!! AAAAA SPOILERS!! I haven't made it through season 3, grrr PBS! Guys, no fair!
ReplyDeleteAhhhhhhh, sooooo jealous! Not only because I'd die to go see a play again, something I've been missing so much since moving from Munich and St. Louis to a small town in Iowa :) and because you got to meet COUSIN MATTHEW! This is simply too much. Very happy for you!
ReplyDeleteOH MY GOD you met DAN STEVENS! I am so insanely jealous, I think I just died a little inside! You're right though, the Christmas Special was definitely not up to the usual standards and I'm not really sure quite what I'm going to do with myself come series four when there's no Matthew anymore :(

Ahhhhh!!! I'm swooning over here :)
ReplyDeletewww.anna-bird.com
Downton Christmas Special did NOT FILL ME WITH THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT. At all.
ReplyDeleteBut the photos of the cast tooling around NY recently have made me smile.
And I know what you mean about plays vs. musicals, I can get so absorbed by the former but struggle with the latter.
GET OUT OF FREAKING TOWN! Matthew Crawley???? Swooooooooooooooon! He looks even more beautiful here than in D.A. Nice work Natalie!
ReplyDeleteLuckyyyyy!!!! I hope you enjoyed his nice British accent. :D There's something special about seeing a play and being able to watch the actors in their element right there in front of you, instead of on a screen. I can imagine live stage actors feel some satisfaction too for the effort they put into their work when they can hear (and see, maybe? sometimes?) their audience's reactions as the action takes place. Plus, comp tickets? awesomesauce!!!
ReplyDeleteOBSESSED with Matthew! Hope it was good and that it was worth him leaving downton for!!

Holy jealously! You are totally lady Mary! Oh man dream come true right there
ReplyDeleteI saw the photo on Twitter and nearly died on your behalf!! And thank you for passing on my views about the Christmas special as well!! You lucky lucky girl.
ReplyDeleteLUCKY!!!! ok, that's all I have.
ReplyDeleteI am SOOOOO disappointed by the Christmas special ending!! I had my hands over my mouth for the last two minutes because I saw it coming. Then I was crushed for like two days whenever I thought about it. Dying for my sisters to catch up so I can vent to them about this lameness.
ReplyDeleteI can't even handle this.
ReplyDeleteAH! COUSIN MATTHEW!! That is awesome. I can't even stop thinking about Downton lately. I've got Downton fe-vah! Also, yes- I do totally think you resemble Lady Mary!
ReplyDeleteso lucky! the most i can hope for is a day trip to the real life Downton Abbey {1 hour from where i live}. but would rather see matthew crawley!!

So jealous, m'lady!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sending on the message from all of us angry/disappointed downton watchers.
ReplyDeleteoh matthew crawley. what a man :)
ReplyDeletethank you for scolding him about the christmas special.
Oh my dear god I cannot believe you met THE MATTHEW CRAWLEY. Oh, oh my god. And, THANK YOU for telling him on behalf of the rest of us how depressing and disappointing the end of DA was. I'm still quite depressed about it. Oof!
ReplyDeleteSo glad you had a magical evening though. :)
Dying with jealousy...I mean I can't evennnn...;)
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing the pics with us crazy fans!
