two words for you! tacos, and doughnut plant. that's three words but we'll live.
on saturday brandon let me drag his tush down to la esquina for tacos, finally. and i'm sorry, but i feel a tangent coming on.
so, my husband is this funny guy. he does not like things that are trendy. if you tell him you want to try a place based on its popularity he'll roll his eyes at you so hard . . . but if you tell him it's a hole in the wall that will likely give him botulism, well. he is all over that. so getting brandon to la esquina, which is both a hole in the wall and a really popular place, took some finagling for a good long while before friday night when i suggested it (again) and he was suddenly, out of nowhere, totally up for it. he's sort of the purest essence of hipster, i like to think. wearing his grandmother's birkenstocks and eschewing materialism and thinking trends are soo beneath him. but then don't tell HIM that.
it ended up being the perfect outing, just us three chickens wandering through the lower east side on a chilly saturday afternoon. after the tacos and on our way to the doughnuts we passed a few overly trendy restaurants that made brandon roll his eyes, when suddenly he said, while deep in thought, "you know, i just noticed i'm wearing exactly the same clothes as all these people . . ."

i know, brandon. i know.
anyway. tacos.
▲▲▲ i have such googly eyes for this huck boy lately, and he is becoming a hard-core mama's boy in return. i love it i love it i love it.
▲▲▲ two horchata for the road
▲▲▲ brandon stopped in at a bodega for a soda and huck somehow talked his way into a package of jelly beans. i'd tell you how thrilled it made him but i think you can see it for yourself.
▲▲▲ from la esquina to the doughnut plant in stuy town is a longer walk than we expected, but it was worth it to snag the last of the day's creme brûlées.
we ended the day with a quick stop at the playground at hester street to burn off all that sugar and then went home for some downton abbey for us and some donald duck for the small man.
hope your weekend was lovely as well.
update:
for everyone who's asked, the boots are from anthropologie last fall, and the sweater is from zara last summer.
and i'm almost never in flats so i guess i'm the wrong person to ask, but they are super comfortable + sturdy. much more comfortable than flats ;).
i lovelove your adventures and seeing nyc through your lens! you have the cutest, sweetest little family. xoxo
ReplyDeletejust love NYC......so looking forward to sunday......New York city here I come(back!!!).....Astrid from France

Seriously Doughnut Plant is cash only? Hopefully the one in Chelsea doesn't go that way too! I can only imagine arriving just in time to get the last creme brulee and then having to go find an ATM and watch someone else enjoy it. Once I trekked all the way to the downtown one in the dead of summer even though I had to be at the Guggenheim for a meeting in seriously an hour AND THEY WERE CLOSED FOR SUMMER VACATION! It was so very sad.
ReplyDeleteNow I desparately want tacos and donuts
ReplyDeleteUmmm can we TALK about your shoes?!!

This was the only reason for my commenting on this post -- what are those shoes on your feet? I need a clear shot just so I can applaud you for walking in them. And the Bomboloni spot's creme brulee pastry might be a good substitute on days you don't feel like heading to the LES.
DeleteThey look pretty damn fabulous!
DeleteOh I completely agree!
Deletei asked about the shoes months ago and they are from anthro!! aren't they just delicious??
DeleteHaha my boyfriend is EXACTLY like that - it drives me nuts trying to convince him to go to places/do things that are "trendy" and then he loves them and has a great time EVERY. TIME. but it's always still a battle to get him to go!
ReplyDelete1. I love your pictures.
ReplyDelete2. Your son is adorable, seriously. Especially when he's super stoked on a bag of jelly beans!
3. Your husband sounds hilarious. He does seem to have the whole hipster look down on accident haha.
4. You are beautiful! Love your blog.
Sweater deets, pleeeeeease?
ReplyDeleteI think I would be as big as a house if I lived in New York. You always post the yummiest pictures.
ReplyDeleteoh this makes me miss new york so much! we just came back from a little visit last week. it was my first time there and i embraced being the cheesy tourist, can't wait for my next visit to explore the city more. for now though i shall live vicariously through your pics ;)

o my gosh! that face with the jelly beans!
ReplyDeleteWe went to the Chelsea one and thought "Meh...what's all the hype about?" but your creme brulee suggestion and enthusiasm make me think we must try again.
ReplyDeleteMy Fiance and I play a game wherein I suggest something (restaurant, home DIY project, wedding idea) and he replies with "Blog or Pinterest?". Implying that I never have an original idea! Its a very upsetting game and he ALSO rolls his eyes so hard at me and it makes me hurumph!
ReplyDeleteGlad you finally convinced him to go for Tacos!

Coconut Cream at Doughnut Plant. It is wicked. And responsible for me going up a jeans size.
ReplyDeleteI have to ask - do the other moms in NY wear heels to the park?! because i thought LA was hip...but we all wear flip flops or chucks. props to looking cute ALWAYS!
ReplyDeletewww.thismomsgonnasnap.com
I don't but I have to admit that I haven't worn heels since I was pregnant with my first child in 2008. Well I did, once for my partner's graduation in January, but I carried flats in my purse. :)
Deletesaturdays were made for THIS.
ReplyDeletehahahaha you're too funny.
ReplyDeleteCute post and pics - want a donut now!!

Horchata is delicious! I always get it when we go out for Mexican or whenever I get a craving for it... :)
ReplyDeleteHave you ever heard of Gizoogle? It's a spoof of google and basically changes anything online into Snoop Doggs language, in a nutshell. I looked at your post while under Gizoogle.net and it was hilarious. Highly recommend. You will get a kick out of this.
ReplyDeleteCheers!
You have just made my week. Awesome. Fo-shizzle.
DeleteGosh I love your vision!

Love your pictures, adorable with your son!
ReplyDeleteloving your jeans!
ReplyDeleteTacos and doughnuts? Yes please! And I love all your pictures!!
ReplyDeleteIt's so hard to stop thinking about donuts when everyone keeps posting about DONUTS. Argh.
ReplyDeleteIn other news, your descriptions of Brandon always make me giggle. I really would love for us to meet Brandon some day, and by us, I mean Mark. ;)
The tacos look delicious, I really really want to make some nowxx
ReplyDeleteI was going to comment on your crazy heels and then saw the P.S.! Can't believe you can wear those walking all over NYC! Major props to you. :) When I was in college I used to wear heels almost everyday, but then I got out of the habit & am definitely a flats girl now. Except then on the weekends when I want to wear my heels they kill my feet... :(
ReplyDeleteThis cracks me up. I've since moved, but when I was living in NYC our favorite thing to do on weekends was hunt down new Chinese food restaurants. So my husband and I would be eating at a relatively well-known "hole-in-the-wall" type place and a bunch of hipstery-types would show up and glare at us for ruining their "authentic" experience. Sorry! With the internet, almost nothing is a secret anymore!
ReplyDeletethose boots are everything!
ReplyDeleteperfect weekend - I love tacos and finally my city has a place that serves good fish tacos, its what I miss travelling for is more diverse foods! AND, I reiterate what everyone has said about those amazing boots - perfect weekend city outfit!

My hubs is sooo like that too!! Hahaha looks like a fun weekend :)
ReplyDeleteThose donuts and tacos look totally ah-mazing!! Yum. What a perfect day!
ReplyDeletebloody hell those shoes are uh mazing and you can't even see them properly! I think we need a post about those shoes. Shoes aside huck is amazing. Brandon sounds exactly like Tom too, he hates the hipster thang..and yet he has a beard and wears vans with a tweet jacket so.. xx
ReplyDeleteI love the Doughnut Plant! (It's not in Stuy Town though.... it's definitely in the Lower East Side.) Yum.
ReplyDeleteI still haven't been to La Esquina! Not the original and not the one in Williamsburg. Maybe I can convince my husband to go to the LES one soon, he works in W'burg and is well aware of how "cool" that one is. He suffers from a serious case of reverse snobbery, something like "Why NO, I will NOT go somewhere remotely scene-y." No amount of begging works... Also, horchata! I need some. Now.
ReplyDeletefinally someone else with a love for horchata! it's like the most perfect delicious desserty drink! and mmm tacos.
