so on saturday we hit up the smorgasburg. i practically ate my entire body weight in barbecue. and coleslaw! i forget how much i love coleslaw. i do not want to love coleslaw, because coleslaw makes me nervous (mayonnaise). but there it is.
not related: we watched warm bodies on friday night and i loved it so much that i had to keep nudging brandon during the good parts . . . seriously. that was kristen stewart's twin, wasn't it? like, the bizarro kristen stewart. who can actually act and isn't at all obnoxious. i know i'm right.
but yes related: we accidentally bought a record player and are now on a mission for good, inexpensive vinyl to play on it. at artists + fleas after the smorg i picked up a bowie album and a real cheap joni mitchell because nobody appreciates the joni mitchell like they should, but i'd love to know what must-own-on-vinyl records you'd recommend for me. already on my list is some simon + garfunkel and a ray lamontagne because i have this theory about ray lamontagne.
you know, i see people fishing in these rivers and even sometimes in the manmade ponds in central park and i always wonder about that. i guess sometimes you just really need to feel like tom sawyer for a second.
hope you had a lovely weekend!
All of this food looks amazing! What a fabulous weekend!

On necessary records... Paul Simon, Graceland, Traveling Wilburys, Elvis Costello anything & maybe throw in a big band something or other just for fun! This is my humble opinion anyway. :)
ReplyDeleteAlso, yay for Ray LaMontagne records... Yum!
Wow, everything looks delicious! I also had a eat-your-weight-in-delicious-food kind of weekend, and aren't they just the best?!
ReplyDeleteand I agree, no one really loves Joni Mitchell like they should. She's perfect for rainy day, sitting next a window, just thinking. I would recommend Cake on vinyl, too!
Emily
How lovely! all of that looks DELICIOUS!

1. I know exactly what you mean about seeing Satan in the eyes. I can tell in the first five minutes of our morning what kind of day it's going to be.
ReplyDelete2. POPPED HEEL STANCE! For the love, that's cute.
Ahhhh, Filipino food is the best. It's one of the few meat-things that I might break veg for one of these days (whenever I think of my brother's first wedding I always think of going to bed at my ex sister-in-law's parents' house with my hair smelling like adobo).
ReplyDeleteHeart's Dreamboat Annie on vinyl is perfection.
your nyc photos literally make me sigh and melt into my coffee shop chair. huck is adorable and so are you. xo
ReplyDeletehaha! brandon might surprise you and love it, but spencer always confirms my fears and hates it. after we hit smorgasburg on saturday, we got slurpees and dollar pizza (which are fantastic in their own right). we had people's pops and asiadog and pupusas and he just wants dollar pizza! that man!
ReplyDeleteHe's getting so big!!

Okay, you gotta tell us where your adorbs shoes are from! Need! Also, I find it hilarious that I would wear Huck's outfit top to toe.
ReplyDeletethey're from madewell! recent, too! go get some, they're seriously comfortable.
DeleteHuck looks adorable in those pics, definitely working it! That food looks amazing too! It's a good thing I didn't know about this this weekend cause my healthy eating would have been killed!

Shop Gold Chain Bracelets!
I really love showtunes on vinyl or even some older latin tunes, Perez Prado and Carmen Miranda are great. I sold my (broken) record player at a garage sale last year. Thankfully it was to a hobbyist who used to repair them. Maybe he was lying, but I'm glad my aunt's machine from the '60s is living a better life.

Okay, I am so happy you hopped on this record trend! I love my record player! if you want mint condition records (and some more modern) go to barnes and nobles website! THEY HAVE EVERYTHING! I got some vampire weekend, taylor swift (RED), michael jackson, U2, bon iver, and the perks of being a wall flower soundtrack there! Seriously EVERYTHING! much cheaper then urban outfitters, and a huge selection. but only online! but you probably already know this! Im coming this summer and would love if you would post some good spots to buy records there!
ReplyDeleteThanks!
Wait, nooooooooooooo! Support your local record stores! They're almost all independently owned businesses, and they also have new records! Other Music in the East Village is my favorite, and Academy Records Annex in Williamsburg is awesome. They both have new and used vinyl. In my experience, they're actually cheaper than Barnes and Noble, and you're able to support businesses in our lovely city :).
DeleteGreat pics with your cute son! Delicious food pics! My husband is drooling over my shoulder right now! lol
ReplyDeleteI remember owning quite a few albums in my youth. I always would sneak into my brothers room at my grandmothers house (she raised him) and listened to The Police (synchronicity) Men At work, Boston, Toto & The Eagles. My sister had the GREASE and Saturday Night Fever albums!! super old school! So far your taste in David bowie, & Simon & Garfunkel are perfect! Need to find me some of those! Going retro baby!
xo
Ahh! Our most played vinyl is James Taylor, Three Dog Night, Chicago, and the Eagles. Also any standard crooners (think Rosemary Clooney, Deano, Frank Sinatra, etc.) We pretty much only buy records at thrift shops and stoop sales (so hipster of us), but that's where the best deals are!
ReplyDeleteIt looks like such a fun family outing. All of the food looks incredible, especially those doughnuts!
ReplyDeleteI can't do coleslaw either... it's just weird.
M.
Ray oh Ray. I want to hear your theory about that man and his music. He has a voice that makes your heart melt. Also, you definitely need to get Bon Iver's albums on Vinyl. The Carpenters are also a fantastic option.
ReplyDeletethe doughnuts from dough are SOO SOO SOO good!! ...and I had those Pilipino spring rolls last year, also pretty delish. my favorite though was the ice cream sammiches! I hope that place is still there!!
ReplyDeletethe only thing i picked up from this pretty post is...isn't warm bodies great?? i was surprised by how much i loved it. so funny. and yes! the main girl reminded me of kristen stewart, but better! like, why couldn't she have been cast in twilight? it would have been totes better. and...huck is dang cute!
ReplyDeleteSooooo cute! Huck kills me with his cuteness, ahhh!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photographs! And it's not nice of you to post so many delicious looking food because now, I'm craving all of them! ;)
ReplyDeleteLife is Beautiful
Huck is so cute. All the photos are great. Hanna
ReplyDeletei cannot stress this enough-- that little huckleberry of yours is the frickin' cutest kid on the planet. i have plenty of friends and family with reasonably cute kids, but this kid beats them all. what a gem.
ReplyDeleteNatalie! It was great to meet you the other week! (I'm MM's close friend you met @church). I spent last week catching up on your blog and... I love your blog! Always have, always will. I missed it, so it's good to be back and a fan:) You are an exceptional writer, and a super mama. I love imagining Jonah having the city adventures of Huck, as we carry on our suburbia adventures. It's a bit like country mouse/city mouse. Anyway, I was all kind of distracted and my head was spinning about the next diaper change when I met you, and wanted to let you know that it was a pleasure!!!
ReplyDeleteha! oh that description of the terrible twos is the most articulate i've ever heard. the portrait of my own two-year old if there ever was one (on the daily though, it's super exciting). good post, i enjoyed it.
ReplyDeleteWow! Those sandwiches really are massive! All of your food pictures are making me hungry.
ReplyDeleteI love your thin gold ring on your pointer finger. I have been on the hunt for a thin gold ring for ages. Where did you get it from?
PS: Huck's expression and his pointed toes are just too much!
#1 record you must have on vinyl: Rumours- Fleetwood Mac. Just crack it up really loud, open up the windows, and pretend you're Stevie!!!
ReplyDeleteWarm Bodies was so good! We just watched it this weekend as well, and the main actress completely reminded me of a prettier, much less annoying, and much better at acting Kristin Stewart. I agree with the PP in regards to Fleetwood Mac - Rumours as well. Such a great album!!
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I are planning a move to NYC and this makes me want to say "screw financial security, LET'S GO NOW!' I am so excited about weekends like this. Also, THE FOOD! All that food looks delicious!
ReplyDeleteWe bought a record player a few months ago and it's actually really fun listening to more than just the song you know from an album. My favorites right now are the Van Morrison ones, but the husband is pining for the Into the Wild soundtrack (shameless Eddie Vedder fans right here). And we like to put on some Nat King Cole or Frank Sinatra over dinner. I also second the Ray LaMontagne and some Amos Lee since you like Ray.
I can't stand how cute that picture is of Huck with his little leg bent! Looks like such a dreamy day.
ReplyDeleteI am going through the terrible 3's with my oldest right now, I didn't even know there was such a thing but believe me there is. Testing all his limits, but with it comes awesome conversations.
And I love your outfit. but what else is new? :)
Have you tried the cafe au lait doughnut?! It's seriously amazing.
ReplyDeleteHow in the world do Huck's clothes stay so clean?! It's amazing!
ReplyDeleteAnd those sandwiches look divine.
I woke up feeling like Huck on Saturday. I love the picture of him posin'. That is DEFINITELY a framer!
ReplyDeleteNatalie, the way you write speaks to my soul. Really. And can we talk about the corn for a minutes. I have the fondest of memories of corn looking like that at festivals in Mexico where my dad grew up. So knowing I didn't imagine it is a relief (because really, any time i tried to describe it to people I just got a weird look).
ReplyDeleteThat first picture is just to die for!!! Such a cute post!, I am wondering about your shorts, spilllll ;)
ReplyDeletegirl they are oldies but goodies from forever 21!
DeleteYou simply must find Van Morrison's Astral Weeks. We started collecting vinyl 6 months ago and can't stop. The best. I'm coming to NY on Friday to live like you for a couple of days. Thanks for the inspiration beautiful Natalie.
ReplyDeleteDoes your Ray theory have anything to do with baby making. Hummmmm....
ReplyDeleteGosh that first picture! Dying.

Beastie Boys Licensed to Ill - fight your your right to party, baby! I would LOVE a smorgasburg adventure, what fun. = )
ReplyDeleteLove the photos! And those sandwiches look totally delicious!
ReplyDeleteYou are so right on S&G and Ray LaMontagne...try some Brett Dennen or Joshua James if you can find them on vinyl. Good luck! xx
ReplyDeleteAllie @ callmesassafras.wordpress.com
Love Warm Bodies!! Obsessed!! I thought the same thing about that girl, I first saw her in Take Me Home Tonight! She is her blonde twin!!! I'm glad you agree! Love the photos in this post!! Gorgeous food and gorgeous people!! :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a great day and LOVE that little ice cream truck!!!!!
ReplyDeletexoxo PARIS BEE kids blog
i thought the exact same thing! i kept checking imdb to make sure it wasn't some fluke kristen stewart movie where it was actually enjoyable. also, i don't have a record player but i just saw that elsie from a beautiful mess has JT on vinyl and suddenly i find myself needing that.
ReplyDeletegod i want all this food so badly right now.
ReplyDeleteI always read and have yet to comment, but I just wanted to say...you're adorable. You and your family. You're all so stinking adorable.
ReplyDeleteNatalie! Get your hands on a copy of Abbey Road, because if ever there were a record with a definitive side one and side two, and a flip between the sides just for further emphasis, it's this record. You will never regret this listening experience.
ReplyDeleteYou can't really go wrong with the Beatles. I'd suggest Dylan and Led Zeppelin too. If you want slightly earlier stuff, the Everly Brothers sound AMAZING on vinyl and, obviously, Elvis. The Rolling Stones are always expensive and kind of hard to find, but worth the hunt. I don't know what you usually listen to in terms of newer music, but Tame Impala, Arcade Fire, MGMT, and Vampire Weekend are definitely worth it for the sound quality.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, welcome to the club of people who spend Saturdays combing record bins all over NYC :).
Girl, you photographer, you! What are you shooting on? They look amaze and kinda like film.
ReplyDeleteI've always wanted to get record player! Glad got one, and got two awesome vinyls!
ReplyDeleteLooks like a great weekend! I love events with there are booths, and yummy food!
Those donuts look so yummy! And that hamburger that your hubby waited 30 min. for...looks pretty worth it to me!
And LOVE your little boy! Love those poses he made for the camera! Work it boy!
And I love your shoes Natalie! You're working it yourself!
Your boy is totally rocking the outfit! Posing like a little child model ;D
ReplyDeleteGot to suggest Fleetwood mac, probably rumours, because it is just amazing, and makes you dance like no other. And throw in a bit of Paul Simon's greatest hits too, can't go wrong! And nothing beats the sound of old vinyls on a record player. Enjoy.
ReplyDeleteGet the Fleetwood Mac Rumors album. My Henry would not take a nap without it when he was a newborn and now he does the baby butt wiggle each time he hears "Second Hand News".
ReplyDeleteLooks like such a wonderful weekend with your family. Those food photos are making me hungry. Congrats on the record player!
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, please tell me where you took that first photo. That wall is amazing! And you have the cutest kid ever but that is obvious.
ReplyDeletePlease spill the beans on your Ray Lamontagne theory. I'm very intrigued by it!
ReplyDeletethese pics of huck are great!
ReplyDeletemore joni! john coltrane my favorite things, and miles davis kind of blue- classic and not expensive. yes let's hear about your ray lamontagne theory please...
ReplyDeleteTwo things that I have a major crush on: 1. Ray LaMontange with his sexy soul voice... Ummmmm sin it ray!!! And 2. Your red and white check shirt. Yes. Major crushing!
ReplyDeleteLumpia! The Fillipino egg rolls are one of the great joys of being married to a Fillipino man.
ReplyDeleteI love Van Morrison Astral Weeks! Such a good album. :) Also, any Dylan. The Band- The Last Waltz is one of my favorite concerts on DVD, so I it would be a great album also. :)
ReplyDelete^^I second the Dylan vote, Janae!^^ 'Blood on the Tracks' is my favorite album to listen to on vinyl.
Deleteyou are GORGEOUS in those photos. that is all.
ReplyDeleteohhh, thank you! this really sweetened my day! :)
DeleteI LOVE the thin octagonal(looking) ring you're wearing on your pointer finger. Would you spill on where it's from? Love the blog!
ReplyDeleteit's from dream collective!
DeleteHi, Natalie! Thanks for your blog. I so enjoy reading it. I'm a teacher, and I'm super busy during the school year. This summer, I've found several great blogs to follow-- yours is one.
ReplyDeleteSo, I am a bit older than you, and I went through a similar feeling when I was 31. I wanted to be spontaneous and get a tattoo. Wanted to feel care free, young! I went to the tattoo shop, and I had to make an appointment. No spontaneity there. Then the tattoo artist cancelled the first appointment. I ended up getting one on my lower back. A magnolia (I'm originally from the South.)I actually forget about it because it's never exposed. Kinda wish it was in a different place. Here I am at 42 and I don't regret it. Actually wanting another, this time on my hip. Love the foot tattoos, but will I in 20 years? Be sure to ask yourself that question. Good luck. :-)
Could you share what the brand of the record player you bought is? And how you feel about it so far? I'm looking at a crosley record player and there are so many mixed reviews out there I'm torn!
ReplyDeleteCat Stevens. you most definitely need Tea for the Tillerman. and also maybe a Sweetwater album. Probably some Dylan, and maybe Bright Eyes:A Collection Of Songs Written And Recorded 1995-1997.
ReplyDeleteVinyl is so great.
