and now for a holbrook update on this fine monday morning:
the holbrooks have put an application in on a giant lofty studio downtown that will be really fun to spruce up but only if our application is accepted first. and only if i don't find something i like better first, too. it's all up in the air.
what do you do when you think you've found "the one" but there's not much you can really do about it because it's a weekend and all of the management offices are closed? well, you obsessively weed out your closet, naturally.
i think there's a deep psychological thing at play here because if ever there's a woman who's feeling momentarily powerless, guaranteed she's taking it out on her closet and making drastic wardrobe decisions.
last one: huck and i met this very nice dragon fly gentleman at the playground the other day. it made me think of that one time i killed a dragon fly on my bed. luckily this one didn't seem to hold it against me.

So adorable. I am in love with Forever 21. It's a problem ;)
ReplyDeleteOur move is a little less than a year away and the feeling of powerlessness has already taken over. I have sold a lot of my closet already! I totally agree with your theory!

I hope you get that apartment! I know you'll Loooooooove living in that area so, so much. We only (finally) packed up our own fifth floor Un. Sq. apartment and made the pre-baby move to a bigger space at the start of this month. And still, even taking the train through Union Square underground makes my heart hurt with longing for our old neighborhood. Fingers crossed!
ReplyDeleteMake an Instagram "closet" account and just link to it. So less obnoxious than clogging feeds with stuff that will never fit us "curvier" ladies.
ReplyDeletedon't get the one above the Indian restaurant! I lived above a fried chicken shop for 2 weeks and we had to move out - everything smelled like oil and even though the store was a few doors down, their extractor vent pumped hot chicken goodness straight into our bathroom everyday when school was out. Now I love me some fried chicken, but I didn't want to smell it while I was in the bathtub !
ReplyDeleteSo. I have "homework" due from one of my professional development courses, and I'm procrastinating, per usual. I was just GRABBING AT STRAWS on the internet, you know...looking for one more teensie thing to look at before I, you know....actually get my life together this morning and WORK (at 11am, no less)...and lo and behold...I'm like "YES! NATALIE BLOGGED!" :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the distraction! ....You are the THIRD person this morning to mention a closet sale. Must be something in the air!
I almost want to buy something even though we are not the same size just so I will have something of yours....haha. That is super creepy and stalker-like and I'm sorry! No fear. I'm entirely too lazy and frugal to travel all the way to NYC to officially do some real-life stalking. ;)
Good luck with the apt! I know the right doors will (literally) open up for you guys! Hugs from Ohio!
Good luck on your apartment hunt- so jealous that you get to live in the amazing city of NYC! I hope you find the perfect place that strikes with charm!
ReplyDeleteCheers!

natalie.. you and i are all the same sizes!! a true danger, if ever i did know one. that is all i have to say. no but also, good luck apt shopping! i swear it's like dating - the right one just finds you. after you've ripped out all your hair and cried and purged your closet. so you are def on the right path ;) xoxo good apt hunting vibes to you
ReplyDeleteIf our feet were the same size, I'd be buying every. single. pair of your boots/shoes. You have great taste!
ReplyDeleteM.
Huck is absolutely precious. Good luck with the apartment! I'm no where near a "big" city, and can't imagine the anxiety I'd have about potentially being rejected by an apartment. Hope you guys get it (unless The Yellow Bear Blog is right and your bathroom ends up smelling like curry... that would suck most of the time).
ReplyDeleteYay for apartment hunting! Any apartment in the city is glamorous to me, I can't wait to see pictures of the one you choose! As for your ebay account, I'm forever thankful for the boredom that Sunday night brought me so that I could get my hands on that Madewell sweater that I know would've been gone in a flash! My fingers couldn't type fast enough! Looking SO forward to that mail day! And those pictures of Huck!! Swoooooning.

I knew I wasn't the same size as you clothes-wise, but I cannot tell you the good fortune that our feet are also not the same size. I'm too broke for a closet sale, thank you for wearing size 6 shoes!
ReplyDeleteSo bummed you have such a tiny foot! I am in love with those black ankle boots. But lucky you, you don't have amazon feetsies. :)
ReplyDeleteKeeping my fingers (as well as my eyes, toes, and ears) crossed that everything works out for the apartment !! Lou xx
ReplyDeleteI am sure your closet theory makes sense because I am almost positive most women take out stress and emotions are closets, their hair, and cleaning? The cleaning of course saved for when in a deep rut. But the closets and hair I am more familiar with :)
ReplyDeleteLiving downtown would be so much fun. Good luck on getting accepted! Hanna Lei
ReplyDeleteif it's meant to be it will be, for sure...however I'll gladly include you on my apartment gods prayers ;) count on it
ReplyDeleteShopping for future homes can be so exciting and stressful! I hope it works out for you!! And those dragonfly pictures are too goll darn cute for words. :)

Haha I love how you came to the conclusion of the shop! Good luck selling it all, hope the walls work outxx
ReplyDeleteI'm always in "awe" of the places to live New York has to offer. I used to daydream about having the perfect place to live New York and then somehow wound up living in Los Angeles? Weird but true. Sending you positive new apartment juju. I'm sure you will find something lovely!

You should write a post one day on the terrible-ness of moving/finding new apts in NYC. I feel like you've done it a few times now :)
ReplyDeleteI'm moving a few blocks down the road in brooklyn, and was pretty stressed through the process.
Good luck! Have you ever seen those Murphy beds that fold up into a desk/bookshelf and when they fold down the stuff on the desk stays on the desk!!! We almost got one but then got lazy and our mattress is still on the floor....
ReplyDeleteDrat!! I am cursing my silly size 8 feet!! I think I died and went to shoe heaven...I wish you all the luck in the world that you find the perfect place. and of course that you post a zillion pics when you do. I know it's silly because I don't know you, but I totally live my dream of being a new yorker vicariously through you & your lovely little spaces on the internet, I'm so glad I stumbled on your blog a couple years back! :)
ReplyDeletei would scoop up every pair of your shoes if only i wasn't cursed with size 10 feet! ho hum.
ReplyDeleteapartment hunting in new york sounds like the best and scariest adventure of all time. i'll be in that boat myself in a few months, but until then i'll be sending all my prayers to the apartment gods your way.
Theres a good "Stuff you missed in history class" podcast on the Boston molasses flood. Go there. Listen. Now!
ReplyDeleteI want your shoes!
ReplyDeleteSorry that you didn't get the loft... I'm sure you'll find something better!!! Remember everything happens for a reason and the Lord work in mysterious ways and all that!!!!

I am moving too and doing the same thing! Wish I was the same shoe size as you, you have adorable things!
ReplyDeleteLike everyone else, I wish I had the same size feet as you because I would have bought those oxblood oxford wedges yesterday. I always admired them from your family photo with the balloon in NYC. I have a random question for you and not sure if you'll get back to me because I have never tried to actually communicate with you before (though I read your blog every time you post)... those F21 bags that you're planning to sell on your instagram... Will one of them include a light brown chiffon midi skirt that you got last year? You wore it in this post ----> http://www.natthefatrat.com/2012/08/busters-favorites-happy-weekend.html If you are planning to sell that, I would LOVE to buy it from you! I almost bought it last summer and then decided against it and have always regretted it since I saw you wearing it in that post. I know F21 comes out with those skirts every few months, but I just really want THAT color. Anyway... no pressure, but if you are planning on selling it, I'd be a quick buyer! If you want to let me know, it's lirpa333 at yahoo dot com. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE LOVE LOVE that huck is rocking some nail polish in this post.
ReplyDeleteGood goooooood luck with the apartment!! I'm just hunting for a place/room to rent/sublet at the moment and facing that crushing realization that I probably need a second job if I want to live in a clean/safe apt and also continue to fund my shopping habit (I refuse to give it up and I think you'll understand). Soooo long story short, I will cross my fingers for you and say some prayers, and if you would feel so inclined to do the same for me (or do you know anybody clean/safe/not on drugs looking for a roomie in brooklyn for oct? I'm employed, I love my swiffer, and I speak french!) I think the universe would grant us both our wishes ;)
ReplyDeleteA girl can dream, no?
Cheers and Huck is SERIOUSLY the CUTEST. I keep thinking he cannot get any cuter and then he does (and I think I've said exactly that comment before).
p.s. I started cleaning out my closet this weekend. Your theory is totally a thing.
Oh girl, I know it! I fell head-over-heels for an apartment--even filled out the application and just about signed the lease when the offer for my current apartment came up. It's called the Fox Hole, no big deal! Now I couldn't be happier!
ReplyDeleteHappy hunting!

What adorable photos of your little man! I am right there with you on the moving/purging thing. Our upcoming move is going to require some serious downsizing, so the amount of things I have to get rid of is ridiculous! I wish I could buy some of your treasures, only, aside from being on my own strict moving budget, you are so much smaller than me in the foot department, it's painful. We are also apartment-hunting in a big, desirable city (Berlin), so I totally feel your pain on finding, obtaining and actually being able to afford a place you want to live in. I wish you all the best with finding that perfect new home!
ReplyDeleteHope you get the apartment! The pictures of Huck are oh so cute!
ReplyDeleteDYING you aren't my shoe size...dammit. I have a weak spot for Sam Edelmans.
ReplyDeleteHoping and praying you get that apartment Natalie! What a dreamboat that would be!
Such adorable photos of him and the fly! He seems pretty excited about it. Haha. I'll check out your shop now!
ReplyDeleteWe just built our own murphy bed/wall bed about a month ago. If you're looking to save money, buy a diy kit. I love that we can flip that bed up and there is a lot more space for my babies to play. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteNatalie, are you interested in joining Bib + Tuck? (bibandtuck.com) It's a great way to closet purge and shop for (sort of) free -- it's entirely swap-based! I'm happy to discuss if you want more info, or send you an invite -- just let me know. I've gotten some amazing things for free!
ReplyDeleteNatalie,
ReplyDeleteWhere is this Greek restaurant? I'm Greek and live in your hood and would love to try! Also, Huck is getting so big!
