on monday we fiiiinally made it out to governors island. despite the crummy weather, and other appealing invitations from friends, despite it all! holbrooks against the world!
governors island is really fun, i want to go back.
there's an antique french carnival going on right now called fête paradiso. it's made up of original carnival rides from france from as early as the 1850s. (the barker at one of the carousels we rode told us we were on the exact carousel that napoleon proposed to josephine on, if you can believe such things.) it's really quite twee and adorable. and food trucks, and bike rentals, a funky art-y goonie golf set, and lots of cute little museums. a gallery of photos from hurricane sandy looked really interesting, but i didn't have time to see it.
i sound like a tourist brochure.
i sound like a tourist brochure.
okay so this bicycle ride looked really tame -- it was mostly run on leg power -- but once it got going it felt surprisingly fast and i was pretty certain that huck was going to fall right off. total mom death grip going on on his back belt loop. we opted to hop off before the bicycles started to run backwards, because i am the world's biggest wimp. i have a badge and everything.
jamaican jerk chicken! rice and beans, daaaaaaang. our friends the soukups made it out there about an hour or so before we did and gave it rave reviews, so of course we had to try it. i'm SO glad we did. i'd go all the way back for that rice alone.
huck wanted to ride this dragon roller coaster, which, look. huck. i know it's probably not that scary, i know kids ride these things every day, but there was no way. brandon volunteered to go on it with him and huck took it like a champ. i felt horrified and kind of wanted to cheer him on at the same time.
and now, a portrait of huck the dragon roller coaster conqueror.
and then the goonie golf course and this cloud . . . thing . . . which was made entirely out of old milk jugs and water bottles. it was really neat inside.
we got soaked. it was great.
and now a final parting shot of the face huck would make at me when he'd get distracted by something and i'd say "huck! catch up!"
don't i know it.
(by the way i'm going to start including links to stuff we're wearing at the end of posts,
because when i get questions in the comments and can't get to them right away i always feel bad.
there'll be a few affiliate links up in here, FYI. not all. just some.)
so! on me:
dress: shabby apple (old)
shirt: madewell
shoes: saltwater sandals
on huck:
shirt: c/o mamacase
shorts: zara kids
shoes: saltwater sandals
This is awesome Natalie... links, yay! I'm always wondering what fabulous things you're wearing. What a magical day! And Huck's face at the end. Oh my gosh! Love reading about your awesome family adventures! <3

Henry is adorable- especially in that last video! His facial expressions so often remind me of my two year son. Except I'm wondering if Henry is ever a naughty two year? - he seems to be so well behaved. And you seem to be a very patient and easy-going mom - please tell me you lose your cool sometimes.... Maybe?
ReplyDeletelove this post! the carnival looks amazing! love all the 1800's rides!

ok, i have to admit i checked the comments to see if anyone had asked about the wrist tattoo! cool idea to try out a temporary one to see if you like it. :) also, dude, i'm jealous, last year i went to governor's island and there were no adorable old-fashioned rides to speak of! (i don't live near enough to come check it out, sad face)
ReplyDeleteyour hair looks amazing. I don't know if it's the new cut or styling products...but seriously. you're making me want to grow my bangs out and start a deep part hahaha
ReplyDeleteI also feel like your picture game has been stepped up so much lately! Not that they ever weren't adorable but lately they're just heart melting. So cute.
DeleteThat is exactly how I felt when we went on a log ride at Six Flags. Since there are 5 of us, we had to split up, and my 5yo twins were in a seat by themselves with me behind them. I had total mom death grip on them the entire time, especially when we went down a huge descent.
