on friday when b was in town we drove down to the coast for some chowder and a salty walk along the water. it was an intensely beautiful day. there is something so energizing about the sheer enormity of all that ocean, isn't there? and the gray shake sidings against all those shaggy fir trees. it was a really good day. brandon and i took turns nearly killing everyone on the car on the ride there and back, bonus! it was pretty thrilling.

(i'm trying this out on the photo heavy posts for a bit. it might not stick.)
i was not driving when i took these photos. :)
the roads to the coast were filled the kind of smoky fog that writes poetry. the air tasted amazing.
we had lunch as mo's, as you do. i think the cannon beach mo's beats the lincoln city mo's by a long shot. brandon and i kept calling it the lincoln center mo's when we were trying to decide which beach to drive to, that's embarrassing isn't it. clam chowderrrrrrrrrr.
we had the whole place to ourselves, it was crazy! and here's a little secret from a former oregonian to you: cannon beach in the winter feels the exactly the same as cannon beach in the summer. cold, windy, moody. cannon beach in january is like disneyland in late september. E M P T Y.
there's the hero shot
i'll taaaaaake..... that one.
playing penguins with grandma. huck and my mom are thick as thieves these days. my mom happens to make the best play dough angry birds this side of the mississippi.
failed attempt at a family photo numbers one through four. huck was not having it. my mom is the most cheerful photographer, she just kept shooting and shooting, eventually SOMEONE was going to decide to cooperate, right? you'd think? meanwhile i kept sinking lower and lower into the sand. almost my whole boot was covered. it was mildly terrifying. huck never did look up from the sand. we couldn't stop laughing. holbrook boys are the grumpiest suckers.
they're also serial rule breakers. :)
i want to go back! saltwater taffy doesn't taste nearly as good once you get it home.
Gorgeous!! I've never craved a foggy rainy day as much as I do now!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous! You make me want to take a trip up north to visit.
ReplyDeleteOhhhh... I LOVE the Oregon coast. And, as a Pacific Northwesterner, I'm still really enjoying that you are here. :) I relate to this much more than NYC (although I like NY too!). Gorgeous photos of one of my favorite beaches. Enjoy the rest of your time in this part of the country!
ReplyDeleteI am dying over these photographs! You are so talented. If I could take a photo like that on my very best day, I would be a happy woman indeed.
ReplyDeleteThese are so beautiful, I'm envious - it's been so long since I went to the beach (Brighton beach is full of seagulls (one of which once pooed on me in a horrific fly by) so doesn't count). I want to be waterside now....

We went on a coastal drive this past weekend! The North Sea {Scotland} was having quite the moody day. It was brilliant! It also feels the same in the summer as it does in winter. I love living by the sea. It's magical!
ReplyDeleteThese photos are gorgeous. I miss going to the beach but the weather here isn't all that great. I still prefer the warmth :)
ReplyDeleteWe went to Cannon Beach when visiting Portland in July and you are SO right, it was cold, damp and moody but full to the rafters of people. We still had a lovely time and got almost stranded on a sand bank, it was an adventure. I love your photos too. xo
ReplyDeleteWow, absolutely breathtaking. I went to a family reunion in Idaho a few summers back, and we stopped along the Oregon coast on the way home. Just beautiful! That first picture should be framed.

i went to cannon beach on saturday and couldn't believe how many people were there for Feb! always my happy place.
ReplyDeleteThat first photo and the sunset with Huck's profile: UNBELIEVABLE.
ReplyDeleteThe PacNW has my heart I think.
okay GORGEOUS! it sounds like a perfect road trip. xo
ReplyDelete"They're" serial rule-breakers? Are you sure you're not included in that "they"?
ReplyDeleteCannon Beach: I want to go to there...
I love these pictures! And the image of the fog that writes poetry. Oh, yes. My favorite place is the beach off-season, particularly this one about an hour north of Boston. I would go so far as to call it a sacred place for us. xo
ReplyDeletePretty! Saltwater Taffy will always remind me of the friends episode where Mona bring Ross some back from a trip...I still have no idea what it is all these years later...I must google it!

you captured cannon beach perfectly. it is BY FAR my favorite coastal town in oregon. too bad we live about a three hour drive away, so we always end up going to newport. which is okay, but no where near as awesome as cannon beach. c:
ReplyDeleteThese are such beautiful pictures! I for one am very jealous of the twilighty beach scene :). Can I make a crazy fan girl request that you do a hair post on the products that you use (shampoo, etc) I hope to one day embrace the true beauty of my hair and I can't grasp the proper products.
ReplyDeleteOh goodness, born and raised in Seattle and I've still never been here! i've always wanted to go because of The Goonies. And that first picture is a dream!! What a great time to share with your two boys :)

ReplyDeletethese images transport me back to Oregon and I thank you for that! The hubs and I took a road trip up the coast from San Fran to Seattle a couple years back and I've never seen any place more beautiful than Oregon in the fall. Also... Mo's.. fabulous food memories come flooding back to me. also.. huck on the whale kills me!!
ReplyDeleteThese photos are so incredibly beautiful.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! Now, from one Oregonian to another, please don't hate me for saying this but... Two places that have the very best chowder... The Chowder Bowl in Nye Beach and Norma's in Seaside. I know everyone loves Mo's, but seriously, Norma's & Chowder Bowl. So great. (It's kind of like the Voodoo vs Blue Star debate)
ReplyDeleteYes, yes and yes. Mo's is THE BEST. We love getting a huge family pot to share. Lovely photos, thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeletebeautiful photos! looks amazing!
ReplyDeleteIt's amazing!
ReplyDeleteI love that city! It is my favorite beach town!
ReplyDeleteThat first photograph is beautiful! Did you get a new camera or are you changing the way you edit? These are A+.
ReplyDeleteOoo I love salty walks! I made home made clam chowder yesterday for the family...we had a snow day!
ReplyDeleteGreat photographs - I love the second one down with the winding road and trees, such a great atmosphere :)
ReplyDeleteIs that The Goonies beach???
ReplyDeleteTHESE PHOTOS ARE MINDBLOWINGLY BEAUTIFUL! Capslock required.
ReplyDeleteso moody...thanks for the wanderlust :) Do you ever feel like you're in a Twilight movie with all that foggy gorgeousness?! (not that I've seen those movies!)
ReplyDeleteYou've been killing it with the photography skills lately.
ReplyDeletethese photos! SO gorgeous! you go, girl! you make me want to visit oregon stat. :) xox
ReplyDeletewe spent Christmas Eve in that exact spot and at mo's, too, and it was by far the best Christmas Eve of my life!

ReplyDeleteWOW! Looks amazing!
ReplyDeleteJess | Malt Memories.
That first picture is really good! For the record, I don't like the "click to keep reading" thing. I usually read blogs as a big digest on my feedly so I don't usually read the ones that make me click.
ReplyDeleteshau-dere? shau-dere? it's "chowdah." ha! mmm, now i want a steaming bowl. lovely photos, btw.

Amazing photos...really beautiful! Just to echo a commenter above, I really dislike the 'click to keep reading' thing too. Not meant to be nasty, just some honest feedback! But beautiful photos.

We love Cannon Beach and although we keep telling ourselves that we should explore further afield, we always end up back there. Whatever the season, we always have so much fun. I have never tried Mo's though, so this weekend when we head over there for the day from Portland, I'll be sure to find it and sample some clam chowder!
